If you’re licensed to practice in multiple states, you can add additional telehealth states in your Rula provider portal to start seeing clients across state lines.
You can expand your practice by adding all the states you're licensed in and:
✔ Show up in more client searches
✔ Grow your practice faster
✔ Maintain a flexible schedule
How it works
- You’ll enter your licensure details and update your CAQH profile—we’ll guide you through it.
-
From there, we’ll take care of credentialing and enrollment.
- You can check the state’s status from your provider portal.
-
Once approved, you’ll receive client referrals in any active states.
- Availability cannot be updated at the state level and clients from any active state can book during your available time slots.
- You can pause a state to stop seeing clients there, and unpause when you’re ready to see clients in that state again.
Add a state to your Rula practice
- From the provider portal, click the Profile tab on the left menu.
- Click the Practice details tab at the top.
- Under Where I practice, click Add state.
- From here, you’ll enter the details for the other state where you're licensed.
- Select the state.
- Choose the license type and review the CPT codes and associated pay rates.
- Add your medicare enrollment details, if applicable.
- Select any payers you may be employed with, or indicate if you’re not.
- Accept the state's reimbursement rates and acknowledgement.
- Confirm the details you entered and click Add.
- We’ll handle the credentialing process, but you’ll need to make sure to update your CAQH profile so we can enroll you with our insurance partners.
- Click the link to our help center on this page for a state-specific CAQH guide. You can also click Update my CAQH profile to navigate directly to that sign-in page and make updates.
- Until credentialing and enrollment is complete, you’ll see a “pending” label next to that state.
- Some states and payers require additional documentation for enrollment—Rula will reach out to collect these as part of the opt-in process.
- Once credentialing is complete, the label next to the state will change to “Accepting new clients” and you can start seeing clients there:
View or edit your states
- From the provider portal, click the Profile tab on the left menu.
- Click the Practice details tab at the top.
- You can find all of your states under the Where I practice section.
- You can see the status for each state (pending, paused, or accepting new clients) and a brief overview.
- State statuses and what they mean:
- Pending = Credentialing and enrollment not yet complete (not yet bookable—you’ll be notified when this is complete)
- Paused = Not accepting new clients
- Accepting new clients = Active and bookable
- Click Edit to view that state’s pay rates and accepted payers, and to pause/unpause the state if needed.
- This is the only state information you can edit in the portal. If you need to update any selections you made when adding a state, please email credentialing@rula.com.
Pause or unpause a state
Once a state is active, if you’d like to stop seeing clients in a given state temporarily or indefinitely, you can pause a state at any time. Once paused, you can unpause the state when you’re ready to start seeing clients in that state again.
- From the provider portal, click the Profile tab on the left menu.
- Click the Practice details tab at the top.
- Under Where I practice, find the state you would like to pause/unpause.
- Click Edit.
- The state details will expand. Check or uncheck the “Accepting new clients” box for that state.
- Checking this box indicates this state is active and ready to see new clients.
- Unchecking this box indicates this state is paused and no longer seeing new clients.
- Click Save.
Pausing or unpausing your practice in all states?
If you need to pause/unpause seeing new clients for your entire practice (not just at the state-level), you can instead toggle the “Accepting new clients” section at the very top of the Practice details tab. This will apply to your practice (all states).

FAQs
How can I change the state where I see Rula clients?
With multi-state practice in Rula, you no longer need to change a state. Instead, you can add a new state and pause/unpause other states as needed to start/stop seeing clients via telehealth in a given state.
For in-person, if you need to move and start seeing clients in a new state, you can change states as long as it's also an active telehealth state. Changing your in-person state to one that is not an active telehealth state is not possible.
How does this impact my pay rate?
You will be paid for sessions in each state based on your license type in that state and how that license maps to specific CPT codes and associated rates. You agree to these state-specific pay rates when adding a new state in Rula, and can view these rates at any time by clicking Edit next to that state.

What do I need to do if I have a CAQH profile in another state?
You only need to create one CAQH profile, which can be expanded to include multiple states. If you are licensed in additional states, add them to your CAQH profile in the “Personal Information” section under “Additional Practice State(s).”

How are time zones handled with multiple states?
A patient’s time zone and state will always be displayed on the appointment cards within your schedule. Your time zone in Rula is based off of your computer, so your time zone for your schedule, billing, and notes will remain the same.

Will I need to submit state taxes for each state I’m licensed in?
Please work with your tax advisor to ensure compliance with state tax requirements.
